Por un infortunio del destino, Romeo y Julieta, ambos hijos únicos, se conocen durante un baile de máscaras y se enamoran perdidamente. Antes del primer encuentro, Romeo estaba despechado por una tal Rosalina, miembro de los Capuleto, razón por la cual acude sin invitación a una mascarada en casa de la familia rival.
Tras asesinar al primo de Julieta, Teobaldo, en un duelo, Romeo se ve obligado a exiliarse. Sin embargo, al enterarse de la supuesta muerte de Julieta, se suicida. Romeo, hijo único (al igual que Julieta), es uno de los personajes principales en la obra, y su presencia en ella es constante.
