Rauschenberg es un artista fundamental del conceptualismo, estableció colaboraciones con músicos y coreógrafos así como con otros artistas visuales, y fue un fervoroso creyente del poder transformador del arte en la sociedad. Visitó Venezuela con su proyecto ROCI (MACC) en 1985.
Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. Robert Rauschenberg, junto a Jasper Johns, fue quien sirvió de enlace entre la generación de pintores expresionistas abstractos más veteranos y los jóvenes artistas pop. Si bien Rauschenberg siempre mantuvo en su obra algunos elementos del expresionismo abstracto, a la vez se rebelaba contra él.
