The film was released in 1987 and caused controversy for its depiction of alcoholism, violence, poverty and a feckless benefit culture. It was written by Andrea Dunbar, who died at 29, and directed by Alan Clarke.
The two girls are Rita and Sue. They are in their mid-teens but they already look worn by life, and yet they're filled with spirit. Rita ( Siobhan Finneran) is more convential and Sue ( Michelle Holmes) is more likely to say things for shock effect, but they're peas in a pod.
