“Ring a Ring o’ Roses” more commonly known in the USA as “Ring Around the Rosie” is a folksong and singing game that was first published in 1881 in England. Although first published in 1881 only, it is believed that the tune of the song was well known at least one hundred years before as well.

The fatalism of the rhyme is brutal: the roses are a euphemism for deadly rashes, the posies a supposed preventative measure; the a-tishoos pertain to sneezing symptoms, and the implication of everyone falling down is, well, death.
