  1. On 16 and 17 April 1939, the year of his 75th birthday, he conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker for the last time. The symphonic works of Richard Strauss have remained part of the core repertoire of the orchestra ever since the performance of his Symphony No. 2 in February 1887.

  4. Four days later, Strauss conducted the work himself, again with the Berliner Philharmoniker, but this time at a tempo that was around a third faster. In this way it may have been possible to rescue Don Juan , but not his relationship with Bülow, who proceeded to distance himself from Strauss; he was beginning to find his protégé’s development as a composer more and more perplexing.

  5. The last recording made by Strauss was on 19 October 1947 live at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where he conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra in his Burleske for piano and orchestra (Alfred Blumen piano), Don Juan and Sinfonia Domestica.
