Tragically, in 1969 he took his life, confirming the opinion of some that he had a manic-depressive disorder although the evidence for this is questionable. Richard Asher left us a marvellous legacy of erudite papers, witty apercus and clinical thinking that will never date.

The hospital perhaps did not adequately realise the nature of his problems, being preoccupied with the problems of the manic depressive illness of its medical director and senior physician, Horace Joules, but to describe this as a point of principle is a travesty, and it is sad that you have published such a description.
