The 14th Brooklyn received its nickname, the "Red Legged Devils", during the First Battle of Bull Run. Referring to the regiment's colorful red trousers as the regiment repeatedly charged up Henry House Hill , Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson yelled to his men, "Hold on Boys!
The 14th Regiment of the New York State Militia, organized in the 1840s, [3] [4] was the United States' most active state militia by the late 19th century. [5] Nicknamed the "Fighting Fourteenth" and the "Red-Legged Devils", [4] [6] the 14th Regiment participated in numerous battles during the American Civil War. [7]
In time, it gave rise to the name by which the regiment became known in the war to friend and foe alike - "the Red Legged Devils." The colorful and distinct dress uniform of blue coat, red trousers and shako worn by the 14th Infantry, New York National Guard, before World War II, was inspired by this Civil War uniform.
