He was the father of actor and filmmaker Ron Howard and actor Clint Howard, and grandfather of actresses Bryce Dallas Howard and Paige Howard. He appeared in films such as Cool Hand Luke, Chinatown, Splash, and A Beautiful Mind, and in TV shows such as The Andy Griffith Show, Babylon 5, and Seinfeld.
