Ralph Joseph Gleason (March 1, 1917 – June 3, 1975) was an American music critic and columnist. He contributed for many years to the San Francisco Chronicle , was a founding editor of Rolling Stone magazine, and cofounder of the Monterey Jazz Festival . [1]

By the dawn of the 1960s, Ralph J. Gleason was recognized as one of the pioneers of jazz criticism. His first reviews appeared in 1934 within the college newspaper at Columbia University, and a few years later, he launched “Jazz Information”, one of the first jazz periodicals in the United States.
