Poseidon (/ p ə ˈ s aɪ d ən, p ɒ-, p oʊ-/; Greek: Ποσειδῶν) is one of the Twelve Olympians in ancient Greek religion and mythology, presiding over the sea, storms, earthquakes and horses. He was the protector of seafarers and the guardian of many Hellenic cities and colonies.

He is distinguished from Pontus, the personification of the sea and the oldest Greek divinity of the waters. The name Poseidon means either “husband of the earth” or “lord of the earth.”

Poseidon was the god of the sea in ancient Greek mythology. According to legend, he was one of the 12 chief gods who lived on Mount Olympus. Poseidon also was said to have a palace under the sea. Poseidon’s main symbols were the dolphin and the trident (a three-pronged spear).
