He also recorded as a sideman for the label including the classics Out to Lunch! with Eric Dolphy and Point of Departure with Andrew Hill, both in 1964. Another vinyl release from a recording made in the same year and at the same studio (Rudy Van Gelder’s) as Hancock’s Empyrean Isles, with the same drummer, Tony Williams, who is central to the interactive improvised playing between band members on this recording.
The third horn player on the album is the legendary Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone and bass clarinet), and with him the rhythm duo Richard Davis (bass) and Tony Williams (drums) joined the band – both had played on Dolphy’s masterpiece Out To Lunch a month earlier.
