Phillip "Pip" Pyle (4 April 1950 – 28 August 2006) was an English-born drummer from Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, who later resided in France. He is best known for his work in the Canterbury scene bands Gong, Hatfield and the North and National Health.
Pyle se distinguió por un beat expresivo y maleable, el manejo multitímbrico de los platillos y la especial manera de conmutar los ritmos jazzeados con otros más rockeros. Por ello se ganó el título honorífico de “El baterista de Canterbury”.
Drummer Philip “Pip” Pyle died in a Paris hotel room on Monday aged 56. Born in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire in 1950, he was a key member of the Canterbury scene and played in Hatfield and the North, Gong and National Health, three bands that traced their evolution back to the work of Soft Machine and Caravan.
