Pierre Balmain, né le 18 mai 1914 à Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne et mort le 29 juin 1982 à Neuilly-sur-Seine [1], est un grand couturier français qui créa sa propre maison de couture en 1945. Il la dirigea jusqu'à sa mort en 1982. Christophe Decarnin, notamment, lui a succédé.

Pierre Balmain n'avait que 30 ans lorsque Paris fut libéré en août 1944. Fort de cette liberté retrouvée, Balmain décida qu'il était temps pour lui de fonder sa propre Maison de couture. Il installa rapidement son atelier au 44 rue de François Ier, dans un espace récemment laissé vacant après avoir été réquisitionné par les nazis durant l’occupation.
