Philip Glenn Whalen (October 20, 1923 – June 26, 2002) was an American poet, Zen Buddhist, and a key figure in the San Francisco Renaissance and close to the Beat generation.

22 de abr. de 2024 · Philip Whalen was an American poet who emerged from the Beat movement of the mid 20th century, known for his wry and innovative poetry. Whalen served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and attended Reed College, Portland (B.A., 1951), before joining the West Coast’s nascent Beat movement.
Philip Glenn Whalen was born in Portland, Oregon, on October 20, 1923. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943–46 and attended Reed College on the G.I. Bill. While at Reed, Whalen developed interests in Asian philosophy and poetry. He also befriended fellow students and future poets Gary Snyder and Lew Welch. Whalen graduated with a BA in 1951.
