Peter Segal nació en el año 1962 en Nueva York, donde su padre era jefe de publicidad en MGM. En la década del 70´, se mudó con su familia a Los Ángeles y asistió a la Universidad de Southern California, donde obtuvo un título en Periodismo audiovisual y otro en Inglés; estudió además en la USC School de Cine y Televisión.
