Peter Scherpenzeel, hermano más joven de Ton, empezó como asistente del grupo en las primeras giras. En 1978 se unió al grupo, tras el abandono de Theo de Jong, y tocó con Kayak tanto durante el exitoso álbum Phantom of the Night como en los dos siguientes.
Con Scherpenzeel como única constante, la primera alineación de Kayak también resultó ser la mejor. Pero el asma de Koopman lo obligó a retirarse en 1976, y Werner fue tan torturado por el miedo escénico y las dudas infundadas sobre su capacidad para cantar que dejo la voz por la bateria, dejando las funciones vocales al nuevo miembro Edward Reekers.

Peter Scherpenzeel. In late 2019 I was lucky enough to spend a few days in Amsterdam with two of my daughters. We met up with Peter Scherpenzeel, on the left in this photo. Peter and I had been in touch via email for probably close to 20 years, but this was a great opportunity to meet in person.
