“Peeping Tom”을 직역해보면, “훔쳐보는 톰”이라고 볼 수 있는데, 이 표현의 어원은 11세기로 거슬러 올라간다. “Peeping Tom : 관음증이 있는 사람” 11세기 초 영국 코벤트리 지역의 영주가 주민들에게 가혹한 세금을 매기자 영주의 부인 “고다이버(Lady Godiva)”는 남편에게 세금을 낮춰달라고 요청했다.
