10 de abr. de 2021 · The founder of James was a beautiful young man whom we all loved [Paul Gilbertson]. I had to kick him out [due to alleged drug use] in the end and it was devastating. I took responsibility for that, and afterwards I think I carried too much responsibility in James.
Formation and early releases: 1982–1987. James were formed in 1982 in Whalley Range, Manchester, when Paul Gilbertson persuaded his friend Jim Glennie to buy a bass guitar and form a band with him. Their line-up solidified when Gavan Whelan joined on drums.
Guitarist. Paul Gilbertson was the first guitarist of the British band James. Career. He formed the original band and began its chaotic songwriting method of jamming. At an early performance at the Hacienda he played his guitar left handed. He advocated improvisation during live performances and during group recording sessions.
He never really had an interest in music in his youth, but his childhood best friend Paul Gilbertson managed to change his mind after convincing him to buy a bass guitar. Two weeks later they played their first concert at Eccles Royal British Legion club, in which their singer did not show up.
