Patrick Henry Winston (February 5, 1943 – July 19, 2019) was an American computer scientist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Winston was director of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1972 to 1997, succeeding Marvin Minsky , who left to help found the MIT Media Lab .
19 de jul. de 2019 · Patrick Winston, a cherished professor and computer scientist at MIT, passed away on July 19 at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was the director of MIT’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1972 to 1997 and led CSAIL’s Genesis Group, which focused on developing AI systems that have human-like intelligence, including the ability to tell, perceive, and comprehend stories.
Patrick Henry Winston is a professor of computer science and artificial intelligence at MIT, where he leads The Genesis Group, a research group that aims to develop a deep understanding of intelligence and the ability to engineer it. He teaches 6.034 and 6.xxx, two courses on artificial intelligence, and has written 17 textbooks on the subject. He also gives talks on various topics related to intelligence and computing.

July 21, 2019. “We have all heard that Patrick died yesterday in his sleep. I am writing with tears in my eyes. This is a sad day for me and also for MIT and for CBMM. For me, Patrick and MIT have always been together. When I arrived at MIT from Germany in 1981, he was the director of the AI Lab where my office was.
Patrick Winston was a Ford Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science at MIT, and a pioneer in the study of vision, language, and motor faculties. He also worked on applications of AI that are enabled by learning, precedent-based reasoning, and common-sense problem solving. He died in 2019.
