  2. P. D. James (1920-2014) was born in Oxford and educated at Cambridge High School for Girls. From 1949 to 1968 she worked in the National Health Service and subsequently in the Home Office, first in the Police Department and later in the Criminal Policy Department. All that experience was used in her novels.

  3. P.D. James began her writing career in the mid 50s and her first book Cover Her Face was published in 1962. It featured one of her most popular characters Adam Dalgliesh who is both a police investigator and a poet. The family moved to Cambridge when she was 11, where she attended the Cambridge High School for Girls.
