This album is a departure from her original compositions, consisting entirely of covers of soul and R&B classics from the 1960s. The album is a tribute to the music that influenced Nyro in her youth. Produced by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, and Laura Nyro , the album was recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia.

Nyro then recorded her first album in 1966 (released in February 1967) and performed at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. She was managed by David Geffen from 1967 and released series of albums for Columbia Records. In October 1971, she married Vietnam War veteran David Bianchini, then left New York City for Connecticut with her husband.
