1. There is someone who drives me crazy using the past perfect to indicate an action that was performed only once, and I understand that it indicates an action performed more than once. For example: I have been calling you. I have been trying to reach you.
Both phrases are correct, but they are used in different contexts. 'I had been there once' is used when referring to a past action that occurred before another past event.
