Cuando Oliver Twist empezó en forma de relatos en la revista mensual Bentley's Miscellani en 1837, su título fue The Parish Boy's Progress. En los primeros episodios, la intención de Dickens era la de describir para sus lectores como era ser un «parish boy» (chico de una parroquia) durante los años posteriores al paso del Poor Law Act de 1834.
Oliver Twist, publicada por entregas en 1837, consolidó la fama de Charles Dickens y es, sin duda, una de sus novelas más conocidas.
