From its establishment as a free-standing seminary in 1923 by the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Notre Dame Seminary has, as its primary mission, the preparation of men for ministerial priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church.

Notre Dame’s Department of Theology offers undergraduate programs as well as graduate degrees including a Ph.D., master of divinity, master of theological studies, master of sacred music, and master of arts.
The building was constructed in 1957, and serves as the major seminary for the Congregation of Holy Cross. Seminarians and scholastics live at Moreau as they progress through the stages of formation; during this time they also take classes at the University of Notre Dame.
