Rodney Whitaker (born February 22, 1968) is an American jazz double bass player and educator. Biography. Born in Detroit, Whitaker attended Wayne State University, and studied with Robert Gladstone, principal bass with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. [1]
His warm sound, unhurried phrasing and swinging melodicism are perfectly suited for high-level exploration of the jazz canon, but here, mainly with the eminent bassist Rodney Whitaker and David Alvarez III on drums, VanHemert offers a new repertoire, reminiscent of the creative choices rolled out by Sonny Rollins's trios over the decades.

I grew up listening to the legendary Rodney Whitaker, and I was honored that he agreed to play for this recording. His omnipresent sound and his time made the recording session a delight.
