This album is notable for being perhaps the most boogie-based James Gang release and for featuring a cover of the Elvis Presley classic "Heartbreak Hotel". Both Newborn and its follow-up Jesse Come Home have been reissued on one CD by Wounded Bird Records.

The band released a final recording, Jesse Come Home, in February 1976, which featured the return of early member Phil Giallombardo, who rejoined along with new guitarist/vocalist Bob Webb (who, like Joe Walsh, had played in the group The Measles).
