Gillian Howard Welch ( / ˈɡɪliən ˈwɛltʃ /; born October 2, 1967) is an American singer-songwriter. She performs with her musical partner, guitarist David Rawlings.

Gillian Welch’s rich and remarkable career spans over twenty years, and is a pillar of the modern acoustic music world. After moving to Nashville in the early 1990s, Welch was launched into the public consciousness when Emmylou Harris recorded a cover of Welch’s “Orphan Girl.”
Together, they moved to Nashville, TN where most of their work together has been produced. Since then they have influenced and inspired new generations of country and folk singers, songwriters and players.
