Originally, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, a friend of the band, was going to produce the album, and they recorded demos together. However, Island Records refused and chose Scott McPherson to produce.
He has released five more solo albums since, and frequently performs live as a solo artist, including live collaborations with Peter Buck of R.E.M. Discography. On October 6, Island Records/UMe will release an expanded edition of the long out-of-print Mystery Road featuring the remastered original album along with nine previously unreleased demos produced by Peter Buck of R.E.M.
