My Dad Is Dead was a recording project of musician Mark Edwards. The project began in Cleveland, Ohio in 1984. My Dad Is Dead has released twelve full-length albums before it officially ended in 2011. A new group called Secular Joy was formed later that year in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The name stuck and several albums followed, strikingly low-fi, with slightly sardonic, often profound meditations on mortality, loss and the crumbling state of the world.
My Dad Is Dead was formed by Mark Edwards in 1985 after a stint drumming in Riot Architecture.While primarily an Edwards solo project, a small rotating cast of musicians also joined the band for live performances and on some recordings - most notably Prisonshake's Chris Burgess (who also recorded and/or produced most of MDID's output until around 1993), and a pre-Tortoise John McEntire.
