En 1963, Tenney établit l’ensemble Tone Roads, qui se fait connaître à New York en présentant des oeuvres de Charles Ives, Varèse, Feldman, Ruggles, Cage, et d’autres compositeurs contemporains illustres. Étant interprète aussi bien que théoricien, Tenney joue les rôles de pianiste et de chef d’orchestre pour le groupe de 1963 à 1970.
This CD is a reissue of the Frog Peak/Artifact Recording, James Tenney: Selected Works 1961-1969, the first recorded collection of James Tenney's music of the 1960s. Many of the pieces on this disc were realized at Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1961 to 1969 where Tenney used Max Mathews's digital synthesis program, which eventually became Music IV.

James Tenney was an American composer and music theorist. He made significant early musical contributions to plunderphonics, sound synthesis, algorithmic composition, process music, spectral music, microtonal music, and tuning systems including extended just intonation. His theoretical writings variously concern musical form, texture, timbre, consonance and dissonance, and harmonic perception.
