Como Youth Choir, lanzaron su álbum debut Voices in Shadows en 1985, con Mike Saurerbrey al bajo; su primer EP, Shades of Grey, siguió un año después, cuando Dan Michaels se unió a la banda. As Youth Choir, they released their debut album Voices in Shadows in 1985, with Mike Sauerbrey on bass; their first EP Shades of Gray followed a year later, when Dan Michaels joined the band. The Choir made a high-profile move to Myrrh Records in 1986 with their next release, Diamonds and Rain.
Through Daugherty's connections to Daniel Amos, Chandler met Terry Taylor, and accepted Taylor's request to join that band during the recording of Doppelgänger, so Hindalong and Daugherty recruited Mike Sauerbrey to replace Chandler as bassist.
