Musselwhite nació en Kosciusko (Misisipi) aunque creció en Memphis (Tennessee). Siendo adolescente se contagió del ambiente musical que impregnaba la ciudad, con el surgimiento del rock and roll y de figuras como Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis o Johnny Cash.
