He learned to play harmonica and guitar when he was 13, and he sought out some of the city's legendary blues artists, learning from the likes of Furry Lewis, Will Shade, and Memphis Willie B.

One of the few non-black--he was a Choctaw Indian--blues-harmonica players to come out of the Mississippi Delta, he grew up in Memphis, TN, where he met up with Will Shade, Furry Lewis and other blues players.
