Maxwell Street was home to one memorable market and an evolving, overlapping parade of many cultures. It was also the birthplace of electrified Chicago blues. The market. Maxwell Street is most known for the lively open-air market that bears its name. At its height, it stretched seven city blocks.
"Chicago Blues" was different from the acoustic country blues played in the South. It was popularized by blues giants such as Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Bo Diddley and Howlin' Wolf and evolved into rock & roll. One of the regular performers was the self-styled Maxwell Street Jimmy Davis, who played in the area for over 40 years.

The Blues. JAZZ, GYPSY, AND KLEZMER. Jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman, born in 1909, grew up in the Maxwell Street area. His father was a tailor, and enrolled his children in a synagogue music program. Soon Benny joined the Hull House Band, and began a music career as a swing band leader.
