Matthew Shipp's New Orbit unquestionably achieves a sound of its own, although describing it - and sometimes listening to it - is somewhat of a challenge. Shipp's piano style is mild and ambient for its avant-garde ambitions, kind of like what Bill Evans may have sounded like if he had been forced to join the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
