Mary Quant was born in Blackheath, London on 11 February 1934, the daughter of Welsh school teachers, Jack and Mildred Quant, who were both from mining families. She went to Blackheath High School then studied illustration at Goldsmiths College where she met her future business partner and husband, Alexander Plunket Greene in 1953.
