In 1962 Marty renamed himself Marty Balin and began recording with Challenge Records, releasing the singles “Nobody But You” and “I Specialize in Love”. Balin was the lead for the folk music quartet called The Town Criers, followed by a brief stint with the Gateway Singers in 1965.

One of the leading voices behind the rock revolution, he co-founded Jefferson Airplane and went on to co-found Jefferson Starship as well as achieving success as a solo artist. Jefferson Airplane received the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
29 de sept. de 2018 · NEW YORK (AP) — Marty Balin, a patron of the 1960s “San Francisco Sound” both as founder and lead singer of the Jefferson Airplane and co-owner of the club where the Airplane and other bands performed, has died. He was 76. Balin died Thursday in Tampa, Florida, on the way to the hospital, spokesman Ryan Romenesko said.
