Martin McAleese (born 24 March 1951) is an Irish politician, dentist and accountant who has served as the Chancellor of Dublin City University since August 2011. He served as a Senator from 2011 to 2013, after being Nominated by the Taoiseach. He is the husband of the 8th President of Ireland, Mary McAleese.
Martin is currently Chancellor and Chair of the Governing Authority of Dublin City University, Chair of the PwC Ireland Public Interest Body, a trustee of the Edwards MacLiammoir Gate Theatre Trust and joint Patron of the 30% Club with his wife Professor Mary McAleese, former President of Ireland.
In support of the work of his wife, Mary McAleese, President of Ireland (1997-2011) Dr. McAleese has sought to develop greater trust and reconciliation among communities in Northern Ireland, with a particular focus on working class loyalist communities in his native Belfast.
Martin is a politician, accountant and dentist, and currently Chancellor of Dublin City University. As the husband of former President of Ireland Mary McAleese, he used his influence to champion human rights, especially in the area of conflict resolution and reconciliation.
