As ‘Martin Zero’, Hannett had recorded the Buzzcocks’ pioneering Spiral Scratch EP, and it was this thick-set and dishevelled figure who had transformed Joy Division’s raw, edgy live sound into the glassy, stately, controlled force on Unknown Pleasures.
