Lead Guitarist, producer, penny whistler and composer Marks Mankwane was born in 1939 in Warmbaths, which is now called Bela Bela, in Northern Province, South Africa, situated 100 km from Pretoria. He started playing guitar at the age of twelve and learned to play the penny whistle later.
The Tower Boys sometimes encountered another pennywhistle group, led by talented guitarist Marks Mankwane, who hailed from the Warmbaths area. Nkosi said to his band members to look out for Mankwane, who was a very polished musician, having played guitar since he was 12 years old.
The instrumental band, the Makgona Tsohle Band (1964–1999), that is noted for creating the mbaqanga music style, led by electric lead guitarist Marks Mankwane and alto saxophonist West Nkosi. Together they were an extremely productive commercial success and a major live attraction in and around South Africa 1964–72.
