MCA Records ultimately dropped them, leaving the Kinks without a label deal for the first time in over a quarter of a century. Longtime keyboardist Ian Gibbons left the group and was replaced by Mark Haley. The Kinks were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, their first year of eligibility.

Haley has been skipper of the South Bend Silver Hawks since 2005. He was named manager of the year in the Midwest League and Player development man of the year for the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005 season).
