Mario Monicelli, Sohn des Journalisten und Theaterkritikers Tommaso Monicelli, schloss ein Studium in Geschichte und Philosophie ab. Späteren Drehbucharbeiten war dies anzumerken. Bereits 1932 schrieb er Filmkritiken, zwei Jahre später drehte er als Amateur seinen ersten Kurzfilm. 1936 wurde er Regieassistent, ab 1942 verfasste er Drehbücher.

The distinguished Italian director Mario Monicelli was in Montreal to serve as Jury Member at the 1999 Montreal World Film Festival. I spoke to Mr. Monicelli about Italian comedy in general and, more specifically, one of the first films to gain both critical and popular success and help cement the Italian comedy film’s international reputation, I Soliti Ignoti (Big Deal on Madonna Street), 1958.
An Italian filmmaker who enjoyed great domestic success, Monicelli directed such films as I Soliti Ignoti (1958), Big Deal On Madonna Street (1958), La Grande Guerra (1959), Casanova 70 (1965), L’armata Brancaleone (1966) and Amici Mei (1975).
