Margaret Fiedler McGinnis (née Fiedler) is a London-based American vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and rights administrator. She is best known as a founding member of UK indie groups Moonshake and Laika, as live guitarist with PJ Harvey and Wire and as the owner/operative of Mineral Point Music Ltd.
Laika were an English band formed in 1993 and helmed by Margaret Fiedler (lead vocals, programming) and Guy Fixsen (guitar, programming). [2] [5] Their lineup also included John Frenett (bass), Lou Ciccotelli (drums), Louise Elliot (flute, saxophone), and Rob Ellis (drums).
The only consistent member was singer/sampler player/occasional guitarist David Callahan, who initially co-led the project with Margaret Fiedler (Fiedler and bass player John Frenett left Moonshake in 1993 to form the more commercially successful Laika).
Named after the first dog to be slung off the Earth, Laika is the brainchild of Britain's Guy Fixsen and Margaret Fiedler.
Chicago-born/London-based Margaret Fiedler McGinnis has a unique place in the history of electronica and alternative rock music. A co-founder of early 90s post-rock genre-inventing band Moonshake she moved on to form the experimental electronic/rock hybrid group Laika influencing everyone from Radiohead to Tricky.
