Madokoro Akutagawa Saori (芥川 (間所) 紗織, Akutagawa (Madokoro) Saori, 1924–31 January 1966) was a Japanese painter whose works were often associated with primitivism, folkloric and mythological subjects, as well as unique dyeing techniques.
Saori (Madokoro) Akutagawa, 1924.5.24-1966.1.31, was a painter from Takashi Village, Atsumi County, Aichi Prefecture (now Toyohashi City). Focusing on the 1950s, she was one of the few avant-garde female painters at the time, and she is also an artist who paved the way with her completely unique technique of dyeing.
Nonaka-Hill is pleased to present Saori (Madokoro) Akutagawa (1924 – 1966), a Centennial celebration of the artist’s birth, marking her first solo exhibition in the United States, spanning an extensive and multi-faceted career from 1955 - 1966. The exhibition opens February 24th and will be on view through April 20, 2024.
