MacMurray had been ranked a Top 20 School in Washington Monthly magazine's ratings of colleges's "contribution to the public good", [15] placing No. 14 in the nation in 2011 and No. 18 in 2013 among baccalaureate colleges, before falling to No. 80 in 2014 due to septic issues.
MacMurray College, founded in 1846, was an independent, four-year college with a strong liberal arts tradition that was closed by its Board of Trustees after the 2020 spring semester. Its 60-acre campus was located in the city of Jacksonville, about 30 miles west of Springfield.

The two coordinate colleges joined in 1969 to become the coeducational MacMurray College. Enrollment at the College grew from some 500 at the beginning of the Norris presidency to over 1000 during the later years of President Gordon Michalson, who succeeded Norris, and the first years of President John Wittich.
