Leonard Bernstein ( 25. srpna 1918, Lawrence, Massachusetts, USA – 14. října 1990, New York) byl americký dirigent, hudební skladatel, klavírista, pedagog, hudební popularizátor a televizní hvězda. Patřil mezi nejvýznamnější dirigenty své doby a byl také prvním americkým dirigentem, který získal mezinárodní uznání.

Un sondaggio svolto tra cento famosi direttori d'orchestra e pubblicato dalla rivista "Classic Voice" nel dicembre 2011 lo ha considerato il secondo più grande direttore d'orchestra di tutti i tempi, dietro a Carlos Kleiber .

Leonard Bernstein, one of the most prodigally talented and successful musicians in American history, died yesterday evening at his apartment at the Dakota on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He was 72 years old. Mr. Bernstein's spokeswoman, Margaret Carson, said he died of a heart attack caused by progressive lung failure.
Leonard Bernstein was de zoon van de Oekraïense Joden Sam Bernstein en Jennie Resnick uit de buitenwijken van Rivne die in 1908 hun sjtetl ontvluchtten om de dienstplicht te ontlopen in het toen nog tsaristische Rusland. Later studeerde hij aan de Harvard-universiteit en aan het Curtis Institute of Music te Philadelphia.
