Lenny své jméno dostal po strýci, který padl v Koreji během korejské války. Vyrůstal na Manhattanu pod vlivem R&B, jazzu, klasické hudby, opery, gospelu a blues. V roce 1974 se s rodiči přestěhoval do Los Angeles. Celkem pětkrát vystoupil Lenny Kravitz také v České republice, poprvé v roce 1996 na pražském Výstavišti.
