Born in Bristol in 1964, Evans was 11-years-old when he and his family upped sticks and moved to Billericay, Essex.. Attending the Billericay School during his formative years, he then spent two years at Thurrock Art College before he moved into the showbiz scene.

He also came out of retirement briefly to star in a charity production of Harold Pinter's Wither Would You Go with fellow comedian Jack Whitehall in the same year, but this was his last onstage performance.

He played college football for the Wisconsin Badgers. Evans was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft with the 13th overall pick.
