But he’s never been properly honored as a Louisiana writer who penned songs for Dr. John, the Neville Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Jimi Hendrix.
King was born Earl Silas Johnson IV on February 7, 1934, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the seventh son of a blues pianist who played with “Tuts” Washington. His father died when King was a baby, leaving his mother, affectionately called “Big Chief,” to raise the family.
