King was born Earl Silas Johnson IV on February 7, 1934, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the seventh son of a blues pianist who played with “Tuts” Washington. His father died when King was a baby, leaving his mother, affectionately called “Big Chief,” to raise the family.
